I am in love with a 36yr old man. He says he loves me and wants me to quit my gov job, move in with him, but I have a 13year old daughter, and he likes to go out and get drunk. He says he will never drink and drive but I am still uncomfortable with this should we break up??

Hi Dina,
He wants to be with you because it makes him happy but he doesn’t care about you because he wants you to quit your job and his promise of quiting drinking is unreliable.

This is undoubtedly a controlling and possibly an abusive person. Why on earth would he want you to quit your job, so that you are fully dependent on him which allows him to control you. Not a smart place to be. Do a search on Google for “Top 10 Signs of an Abusive Man” and be warned.

a) No, you should not quit your job.
b) No, you should not move in with him.
c) You can stay in the relationship if you like, but he’s going to have to stop drinking if he wants your relationship to go any further. You child is your first priority and your current job is stable. And forgive me if I sound like I am about to insult him, but he’s stupid for asking you to quit your job! He’s letting his alcohol kill his brain cells!

no you can’t compromise your future, and you 13 year old child’s future, for this man. You need to keep your independence. You’d regret it so much if he doesn’t keep his promise and keeps drinking, and you don’t have a job. The fact that your posting on this sight indicates that you yourself doubt his sincerity.
