So ladies, you thought you’d found the man of your dreams but he turned out to be just another sewer dweller with rodent, as opposed to romantic, tendencies. Well, we’ve all been there and if you haven’t been there yourself then right here is where you find out what happens next.

The best advice that anyone can give is that you WILL get over him in time however, how much time, is another matter entirely. For me it was about 2 years before I totally blitzed my ex-partner from my thoughts and now I’m pleased to say that I’ve never been happier.

Below is a simple to follow 5-step-plan that I hope will put you back on the road to recovery and if all else fails then you’ve always got the couch to fall back on, which leads me, quite neatly, to Step One…

Step One: Mooch

That’s right, why not: draw the curtains, grab a bucket-load of chocs, put on a box set and wallow in your own dark pit of despair and self-pity. Let those tears flow and rid yourself of the pent up emotion that’s bound to have been welling up since the inevitable first stages of separation. There’s nothing that says that you have to get straight back on the horse and from taking time off work to locking yourself away from the world, just do it for as long as it takes to feel better.

Step Two: Get physical

So, the feeling sorry for yourself stage is out of the way and you’ve opened the curtains and remembered that there’s a world outside your front room. A great source of happiness for many is getting into shape. You don’t have to go crazy, signing up to a gym, going on long country walks, starting a gentle exercise routine and joining a sports club are all great ways to get you fit and feeling better about all that chocolate you ate in Step One.

Step Three: Fill your mind

Although the temptation to dive straight back into a relationship is often cited as being one of the most-important means of getting over an ex, it’s often best to fill the physical gap with something a little more mentally stimulating. Learning a language, writing a book or joining an evening class can help you to move on by filling your little grey cells with useful information and often non-engineered opportunities to meet new people. When you split up with a long-term partner there will be a physical and mental gap in your life, it’s up to you what you fill it with.

Step Four: Fill your boots

You’re feeling a bit more positive, you’re enjoying your new writing class and you’re dropping pounds like the UK economy, now’s the time to buy, buy, buy, and smile, smile, smile. Make sure you’re feeling happy when you hit the shops because your mood and confidence levels will influence your purchases. Once you’ve reached this stage you’ll already be starting to feel good about yourself and there’s no better moment to buy those: skinny jeans, little black dresses or sexy vintage lingerie items that will turn you, and potential dates, all the way on.

Step Five: Get back on the horse

So, you’ve started to get fit, you’ve joined a club and you’ve bought some saucy underwear, there’s only one thing left to do: start dating again. It may seem like an extraordinarily daunting prospect but that’s what also makes the whole process very exciting. Dinner parties, blind dates, online dating, speed dating, singles’ nights, whatever floats your boat when you’re ready to get back on the horse you’ll find numerous ways to jump back into the saddle. Just remember that the last thing anyone wants to hear across a romantic table for two is tales of past loves so make sure you’ve got that rat out of your system first before you look for another one.
